We are pleased to announce that one of our National Honor Society members, Avinash Murugan, has received a scholarship from the national NHS scholarship program. Avinash is receiving a State Finalist scholarship; he is one of 150 recipients out of nearly 6,000 applicants. The application process (which requires an essay and other information from the applicant as well as recommendations from the principal and chapter adviser) is particularly rigorous. Avinash is the first recipient of this scholarship from our chapter and we are very proud of him! |
Congratulations to Amy Nguyen on her outstanding performance on the ACT college admissions and placement exam. She earned the highest composite score of 36. On average, less than one-tenth of one percent of all test takers earns the top score. We are so proud of you! |

The Cheer Competitive Squad had a very exciting win two weeks ago at the Cheer Power Competition held at Six Flags. The 16 member team came in 1st place in their level and also won the High Point Award which is the highest honor, as they beat out every High School competing no matter what level. They competed against 6-8 high school teams, three of which were from Fort Worth.

Students and educators from local Universities and high schools were invited to attend a breakfast at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas in honor of Ted Turner. Mr. Turner was this year’s recipient of BRIT's International Award of Excellence in Conservation. He currently owns approximately 2 million acres of personal and ranch land, and is the second largest individual landholder in North America. Turner lands are innovatively managed and work to partner economic viability with ecological sustainability.  When asked what the most pressing environmental issues are, Mr. Turner responded with the following two at the top 1.
Nuclear weapons - "we could wipe out all of human history in an
afternoon" Students were invited to ask Mr. Turner questions (including the one above). Ben Galindo of Paschal High School was brought onstage by Dr. April Sawey and given a signed copy of Mr. Turner's Book for his stellar questions. ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE For teen from Paschal High School
New York City, April 24, 2012 -- Captivating audiences with a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Nolan Chapa from Forth Worth, Texas, a student of MichaelMuller at Paschal High School placed as a semi-finalist at the 29th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. The competition was held on April 23rd at Lincoln Center in New York City for 58 winners of ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Nolan had won the ESU Ft. Worth Branch regional competition.
This year’s winner of the English-Speaking Union Charlottesville regional competition, Tiffany Ames, won first prize in the ESU National Shakespeare Competition, winning a full Scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art’s Young Actors Summer School in London, England. Second place winner, Cyler Winnie, representing the Portland Branch, won a scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp. Third place winner, Katie Weatherseed, representing the Greenwich Branch of the ESU, won $500 from the Shakespeare Society.
The English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition is a school-based program to help students develop their speaking and critical thinking skills and their appreciation of literature as they explore the beauty of the language and timeless themes in Shakespeare’s works. In three progressive competition levels, students memorize, interpret, and perform monologues and sonnets in their own schools, at ESU Branch sponsored community competitions and at the National Shakespeare Competition. Inaugurated in 1983, the program has engaged more than 250,000 young people.
As the winner of a local English-Speaking Union Branch Competition, Nolan was awarded the trip to New York City for the final stage of the Competition. The provided the Branch finalists with two full days of activities, including an acting workshop at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and tours of New York City. Perhaps best of all for these teenagers was the opportunity to spend a weekend in New York City with other students from across the country who share their love of theater, language and, particularly, Shakespeare.
Among the distinguished judges for this year’s Competition were Shakespeare scholar and Rutgers University Distinguished Professor of English Maurice Charney; Director of Mission and Co-Founder of the American Shakespeare Center Ralph Alan Cohen; New York University Tisch School of the Arts Classical Studio Director Louis Scheeder; Artistic Director of The Shakespeare Society Michael Sexton; Program Director of the Poetry Foundation Stephen Young; Casting Director at the Public Theater Heidi Griffiths and Peter Francis James, an actor who just finished his role as Oscar in Edward Albee’s The Lady from Dubuque. The judges were asked to evaluate three components of the students’ performances: understanding of the material, ability to effectively communicate to the audience and artistic expression.

This weekend the Academic Teams traveled to Texas Tech to compete in the Regional UIL Competition. We had a great weekend of academic competitions and many students have earned the opportunity to compete at the State level in Austin toward the end of May. Below are a few of the highlights from this weekend. Computer Science (Coach Gary Hicks) The Computer Science team won 1st place at region and will now advance to STATE!!  Current Events (Coach Michael Kelley) The Current Events Team fell just short of advancing to State (third place team).  Spelling and Vocabulary (Coach Crissa Sigl) Amy Nguyen finished third place individually at Region and will be advancing to STATE!  Feature Writing (Coach Crissa Sigl) Sarika Sabnis wrote a fantastic article, but will not be advancing to State. Making it this far is a huge accomplishment for a freshmen!!! Science Team (Coach - Brinker) The Science team won 1st place at region and will now advance to STATE!!  Math Team (Coach Heather Denton) The Mathematics Team finished in 2nd place and Dominic Yurk finished 3rd overall. Dominic will advance to State! The varsity boys finished 9th out of 16 teams at the regional golf
tournament in Lubbock this past week. The team shot 315 on day one but came
back strong with a 306 the second day. Team members include Colin Wickman, Alberto Villalobos, Garrett Brown,
Grayson Benavides and Ryan Anderson. Congratulations to Colin Wickman for being selected to the
2nd Team Boys Golf Academic All-State Team and Rylee Pedigo for advancing to the regional tournament as a medalist. Rylee had scores of 88 and 89 over her two days of competition at the Rawls Course in Lubbock. |
The computer science team and science team have advanced to the UIL state finals. Members of the computer science team include: Dominic Yurk, Matthew Roberts, Luke Wilson and Alex Hulen. Going home with a gold medal for top score on the written portion of the competition was Dominic Yurk. Matthew Roberts and Alex Hulen tied for second and each received a silver medal. The winning science team members include Dominic Yurk, Alex Hulen, Charles Jang, and William Lyles. Dominic also went home with individual gold medals for top scores in biology, chemistry and was the overall individual science champion. Charles Jang and Dominic Yurk also received silver medals for their second place finishes in biology and physics, respectively. In addition to the teams, two individuals qualified for the UIL state competition in separate events. Amy Nguyen garnered a bronze medal in spelling and vocabulary and Dominic Yurk got a bronze medal for his third place finish in mathematics. Good Luck to all at state! |

Paschal High School has just learned the senior student to advance to the final stage of the Fort Worth Optimist Club Scholarship, Sportsmanship and Athletics Scholarship Contest is: Katriel Lopez. Congratulations!!! Katriel will join the finalists from each FWISD High School at the awards luncheon on April 27th where the 3 scholarships of $3000, $1500 and $500 will be awarded. We know she is #1 in the eyes of the panther family! |
Paschal had 10 state qualifiers and 5 that medaled Saturday at Bryan/College Station. The artists are Julianne Dewar, medaled; Abby Francis, medaled; Meredith Fuller, medaled; Emma Howard, Abbey Jackson, 2 qualifing pieces, one medaled; Cheyenne Napkori, Gabriella Rios, medaled; Ariella Scott and McKenzie Tucker. So proud of them all!!  |

This award goes to a junior boy and junior girl in recognition for their scholastic, extracurricular, personal and community achievements. They were awarded this honor by the Fort Worth Optimist Club on Friday, March 30th. |
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JROTC PANTHER BATTALION FOR TAKING THE GRAND CHAMPION TROPHY AT THE JROTC DISTRICT DRILL MEET THIS PAST WEEKEND. THE DRILL MEET, WHICH WAS HELD AT FARRINGTON FIELD, INCLUDED 13 HIGH SCHOOL JROTC PROGRAMS. THE RIFLE TEAM, ACADEMIC TEAM AND MALE PHYSICAL FITNESS TEAMS ALL CAPTURED FIRST PLACE, THE UNARMED EXHIBITION DRILL TEAM CAPTURED SECOND PLACE AND THE ARMED DRILL TEAM CAPTURED THIRD PLACE IN BOTH THE REGULATION AND EXHIBITION PHASES. GREAT JOB CADETS! |
The Computer Science team won Lockheed's first annual CodeQuest programming contest, and picked up another big feather for Paschal's academic bonnet. There were 25 schools and 50 programming teams present from over the state. Paschal has some very talented students. Amazingly, Paschal teams finished FIRST and THIRD in the advanced programming division. The team of Matt Roberts, Luke Willson, and Dominic Yurk won first place, and the team of Alex Hulen, Amy Kruzick, and Erik Nguyen won third place in the advanced division. Our academic headdress has a very nice plumage.  |
As the premiere biology competition for high school students in the United States, the USA Biology Olympiad enriches the life sciences education of nearly 10,000 talented students annually. It provides the motivation, curricular resources, and skills training to take them beyond their classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness. After two rounds of challenging exams, twenty Finalists are invited to a residential training program where they learn advanced biological concepts and exacting lab skills at Purdue University. Ultimately, four students earn the right to represent the USA at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), a worldwide competition involving student teams from roughly sixty countries. On Saturday, March 24, 75 orchestra and mariachi students performed at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. We had 13 soloists and 1 string quartet earn first division ratings. 11 soloists were certified to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in May. This is the highest number of students ever certified to State from the orchestra at Paschal!
